Nigerians, this is how to be a loyal citizen

As Nigeria braces for another election circle, political divisions among the citizens have continued to widen, with many resorting to unpatriotic means of promoting their political agenda.

At the heart of the numerous political and economic challenges facing this country are unpatriotic and disloyal citizens who are oblivious of their duties and obligations as citizens of Nigeria or are simply selfish.

Loyalty is not an ambiguous word/concept, but however, many citizens are often time (consciously or unconsciously) misinterpreting it to suit their biases. What is loyalty?

According to, loyalty is a devotion and
faithfulness to a nation, cause, philosophy, country , group, or person.
Loyalty is an essential quality in any close relationship. It’s a strong assurance of another person; be it in work, business, family, friendship or any other form of relationships.

Loyalty is a very broad term which may be applicable in case of one’s family, locality or the country. A loyal person is ready to sacrifice even his own life for the sake of his master, friend, relative or the country. A loyal person bears a moral character, honest outlook, and disciplined manners.
A truly loyal man cannot be bribed or tempted to deviate from his own path. He is like a stone pillar which is firm and strong to withstand any force that may try to penetrate through it. He is absolutely trustworthy, reliable and dependable in all circumstances of life.

Loyalty is a quality which is found mainly among the brave and the bold characters. Meek and weak persons are mostly found lacking in the spirit of loyalty. Loyal people can become great leaders, great commanders, or great administrators in life because they often command the respect and confidence of others. Disloyal persons are hated and disbelieved by all.

Loyalty forms the basis of human character, builds up the foundation of a free country, and demands all law-abiding citizens to be loyal and patriotic. A truly loyal person will be loyal because he/she wants to, and not because he/she has been asked to.

*Loyalty brings respect

*Loyalty builds trust

*Loyalty upholds integrity

*Loyalty ensures sincerity

*Loyalty is love

*With loyalty, there is KARMA: We all want good Karma, that’s why we need to be good people because; what goes around, comes around.

*LOVING AND RESPECTING THE NATIONAL SYMBOLS: Nothing shows you love your country more than showing it through clothing or accessories! Each country has their own identifying image that defines who they are, and how they are perceived internationally; ours is the ‘Green and White flag’.

BEING AN ACTIVE CITIZEN: You can demonstrate your loyalty to Nigeria by being part of its political process. You can do this by contributing your time, effort, and knowledge to the politics of the country. Through this, we can build a better nation for all.

SERVING THE COUNTRY: Nothing speaks more to the commitment for one’s nation than joining the military, the police, paramilitary organizations and or presenting yourself to be mobilized for the National Youth Service Scheme (NYSC) in order to contribute your quota to national development. It is the ultimate act of willingness to sacrifice life for the liberty of countrymen.

STUDYING THE HISTORY OF NIGERIA: Learn about the foundation of the country, the key moments leading to its creation, and its reputation since the time it became a sovereign nation. Learn about the national ethics and values of the country.

LEARN AND MEMORIZE THE NATIONAL ANTHEM: Showing your patriotism through the National Anthem is important because our national anthem contain words that vividly describe our solemn pledge to build a united and prosperous nation where our individual and collective Rights are protected.

Edwin Louis Cole once said, “Confidentiality is a virtue of the loyal, as loyalty is the virtue of faithfulness”. As a loyal and patriotic Nigerian, you are to put the interest of the country first before any other thing. Never give information that will compromise the security and territorial integrity of Nigeria to other nations; especially at a critical time like this when Nigeria is facing alot of security challenges.

Fellow citizens, let’s remind ourselves this morning that as proud Nigerians, we need to be faithful to our nation because, we need our nation and our nation needs our loyalty. God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
